Karukera Madras Handkerchief

from £1,555.00

The ultimate striking handkerchief set from the original SS23 Karukera Collection, now also presented in the Fire & Return: The Spirit of Vaval SS27 as rememberance.

A 2 piece set exploring French Caribbean culture (Guadeloupe) and the use of the traditional textile ‘Madras’. Breaking down the traditional wear from past eras, we encorporate it into a contemporary design to be adorned as ready to wear.

  • Handkerchiefs were manadatory for women of colour as a means of them forcibly needing to cover up their hair during the enslavement in the Caribbean. They would always wear it around their neck and shoulder for accessibility, which has become a natural foundation of the traditional wear we know of today.

  • The handkerchiefs are wrapped around the garments forming layers cascading downwards.

  • The White base Madras is made in house by the designer, this print is an original that is not found on the market. All prints are made from beginning to end, sourced locally by a sustainable print company. We tend to occasionally use original traditional madras in our garments that we will make a note of.

  • Fabrics: 100% Cotton Satin, 100% Bull Cotton Denim, 100% cupro bemberg lining

  • Each Handkerchief on the Jacket arm has a invisible magnetic fastening.

  • Handkerchief Trouser has a back invisible zipper for fastening.

The Jacket and Trousers can be ordered separately if you do not wish to purchase the complete set.
